Samuel Bayer
Based in Los AngelesOver the past three decades, Bayer has shaped the visual landscape of popular music, directing groundbreaking videos for David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Metallica, John Lee Hooker, and Green Day—including the entire visual campaign for the Grammy-winning album American Idiot. His work dominated the 2005 MTV Music Video Awards, earning Video of the Year and Best Direction.
Bayer’s commercial work has been equally acclaimed. Beginning in the 1990s, he directed iconic campaigns for Nike, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Pepsi, and Budweiser, earning multiple Clio and Andys Awards. In 2011, his Chrysler Super Bowl commercial “Born of Fire”, featuring Eminem, won a Cannes Gold Lion and an Emmy Award.
In 2013, Bayer’s solo exhibition at Ace Gallery Los Angeles brought his fine art practice into focus, while selections of his films entered the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. His feature film debut, A Nightmare on Elm Street, grossed over $120 million worldwide.
Currently based in Los Angeles, Bayer is developing several film and television projects, including the science-fiction epic ICARUS RISING and the coming-of-age drama TRIBE. He is also the founder of All Time Comics, the first superhero imprint published by Fantagraphics.
