Richard Nam

Based in Los Angeles

Richard Nam (b. 1997, Los Angeles, California) is an artist trained extensively in drawing, painting, printmaking, and ceramics. He received his BFA from UCLA in 2019 and his MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 2021.

Nam’s work explores the mundane and domestic presence of cattle, particularly cows—animals rarely seen in urban environments yet deeply embedded in global capital systems. Through scenic and portrait-based compositions, he depicts these animals in both fantastical and industrialized settings, positioning them as figures of quiet resistance, contemplation, and labor. His practice reflects on the tension between nature and economy, tenderness and industry, and the poetic weight of the everyday.
